Hip-hop has a very distinctive sound. Usually it’s a simple beat that mimics clapping or has staccato drum sounds that mimic syllabic beats that a rapper would use. It’s not often a dance beat, but it’s one you can bob your head to. There’s often a pattern of musical scales that are juxtaposed the staccato beats, and more often than not in modern hip-hop there’s squelching synthetics that recall beatboxing. Noisa’s Get Deaded has a a hip-hop feel and the new Machinedrum Remix really pulls the whole thing together.
The low whispering croaks of frogs in unison comes to mind when I hear the beginning of this song. It kind of reminds me of the opening to that old Budweiser commercial with the frogs. It was a huge thing in the 90s, so if you don’t know it, go look it up. It sounds like ribbit-ribbit-ribbit in tune with the beats and what sounds like a brass instrument line of horns. As everything slowly builds a crescendo of powerful sound there’s a snare drum that mimics clapping. I’ve never heard a frog rap or sing before, but these certainly have some mad skills, bro. Can’t understand anything they say, but I’m going to guess by the title of the song it’s probably, “Get deaded.” Just a guess. About a minute into the song there’s some synthetics that kick in that almost sound like a plucked string instrument, then some laser sounds before we move back into the frogs. There doesn’t seem to be a definite defined drop in this track, but that’s okay because it’s really interesting and keeps you wanting more, especially with the teasing of a keyboard around the two minute mark. It seems around that time our frogs consume some helium and begin to croak really quickly because that’s what the vocals begin to sound like just before the track fades.
It’s a great track, but it also feels like this is one that you’ll have to listen to quite a few times because the elements that create the layering of the track seem like they are spread a little thin and you will miss some great moments if you’re even slightly distracted. Not that it bothers the frog overloads that you have to listen to their track multiple more times. Go ahead. Put in your earplugs and close your eyes as the subliminal messages drag you down into the swamp. Bud-WISE-errrrr. Ribbit.
