Q. Your partnership has spanned several years and a lot of success...how did you meet, and decide to begin working together?

A.We were both making music separately before we started working together, and were fans of each other’s work. We’d also bumped into each other a few times at different club nights, which I guess was cool because we knew we had a similar taste in music. Max was looking for a full time singer after working with a few different girls, and he contacted me (katie). I was so excited to be part of Koven because I knew what a talented producer Max was.

Q. Can you share with our readers a bit about how you decided which songs to put on this release?

A.I suppose we wanted to revisit the tracks we loved the most, tracks from our back catalogue that some people may have missed. Also the tracks other people are remixing as the ones that smash it most in our sets, it’s nice to get some fresh ears on them and give them a revamp so we can continue to play them out. The ‘Muzzy’ remix of ‘Eternal and You’ has been opening our sets for awhile and it goes off!

Q. The word "diverse" is often used to describe your body of work, ave with good reason. With the range of styles that you are able to produce, can you tell us who some of your influences are, both in the genre and outside of it?

A.Within the genre, we both love listening to artists such as Memtrix, Joe ford, Muzzy, Camo & Krooked and The Prototypes (just to name a few). Outside the genre we enjoy listening to acts like Radiohead, Bonobo, Jon Hopkins, Arca, Odesza and Clark. So quite a varied selection of genres which influence us when writing.

Q. Looking back over your incredible career so far, what would you say to some of the newcomers to the scene about what you, in hindsight, wish you had known earlier on?

A.I guess something I would tell people is that its a very long process (for most), it can take along time for things to start going the way you want, and a lot of things or 'moments' you think might be it, don't be dishearten when they aren't because other opportunities will come along. Also be prepared to spend along time 'skint' because it can take ages to make money from a music career.

Q. Between both of you, how do you balance your creative partnership? Are there any special areas in which you are able to help the other, in a way that fuels your creative process?

A.Two heads are definitely better than one! I think we both bring something to the table that each of us have learnt from. Max has incredible production skills, and he can write such emotive chords. I like to think that I bring something with regards to lyrics. We both work separately but when we come together to write I think that's when we write some of our best tracks.

Biography

One of the most unique and exciting bass music outfits to emerge in recent times, Koven is the production alias of producer Max Rowat and Katie Boyle.

First conceived in December 2011, the Koven project was sparked into life with the ‘Wake You Up EP’. Instantly making an impact across the scene, Koven’s very first release saw support from some of the most influential tastemakers of the time, including UKF and Inspector Dubplate. This free download also began a trend for Koven across the airwaves, receiving substantial backing and airtime from the likes of Radio 1 to XFM, as well as Ministry of Sound.

Finding their way into some of Bass Music’s most respected sets, it wasn’t long before Koven had a queue of equally talented producers at their door, eager to work with a new and exciting production force. Collaborating with Modestep on their track ‘Take It All’ and featuring on their highly anticipated album ‘Evolution Theory’, Koven went on to Support Modestep on their UK tour.

On the cutting edge of production as well as performance, Koven's sets held their own - partly thanks to the Alphasphere, a prototype midi controller from NuDesign. The Alphasphere has become an integral part of Koven's live sets and studio work alike - allowing the innovative group to channel their unique blend of epic bass and organic musicality directly to the crowd - creating new ideas in the process.

The original Pessimist, which starts with an unexpected and musical guitar riff, combined with a lilting and natural vocal, quickly takes off into a soaring electronic build up with a classic dance beat. There is a quiet interlude with strings midway, a hint of piano, and then  whirls off into another several layers of electronic beats and synth sounds. In the Insomniax remix, the organic strumming and piano notes greet us again, and stay with us a bit longer, before separating and floating and then being drawn together by a darker, heavier synth. There’s a bubbly quality that runs through the middle, and a male voice joins the female in a gorgeous harmony. Be prepared for a couple of new and heart surging builds, as this remix takes all of the skill of the original arrangements and brings it to a new level.

On From The Start, Bmotion definitely keeps the romantic, sweet and melodic qualities of the original, while somehow simultaneously driving it into a more energetic and pulsing version of itself. It’s beat is infectious, uplifting and distinctly heavier, making the remix more intense, and a bit dirtier, without losing its musical roots.
With these two captivating remixes, suffice it to say that hearing all of the offerings of the eventual full release is going to be an amazing experience that won’t disappoint. Xtene Sixteen Editor in Chief

After making a name for themselves with the free 'Wake You Up EP' and remix work, in March 2013 the time had come for Koven to drop what was unbelievably their debut release. Released on Futurebound's Viper Recordings, an outlet renowned for its ability to find new talent, 'More Than You' announced Koven as a new, formidable force on the EDM radar. A blend of melody, contorting bass and the unforgettable vocals of Kate Ashton, 'More Than You' solidified Koven's style, earning them even more new fans and over 1.5 million views in the process. The single featured remixes from Drum and Bass dancefloor kings DC Breaks and support from Radio 1's Zane Lowe, 'More Than You' began the next phase of Koven's rise in the dance music scene. Toontracks' endorsement with their Superior Drummer suite has also become an integral part of the Koven sound by helping to produce the epic, yet live style the group has become so famous for.

Gaining recognition at a rate of knots with their organic yet precise production, Koven went from strength to strength with the release of 'Make It There'. Once again combining live instruments, raw vocals from Folly Rae and soaring melodies all wrapped up in polished production, 'Make It There' recreated the magic once again, and included a remix from Viper Recordings' very own The Prototypes. This record had continuing support from Zane Lowe and also saw the Koven perform their first ever Live Lounge for Crissy Criss on Radio 1xtra.

Building on this success, Summer 2013 saw further remix interest with Koven lending their hand at reworking the summer anthem Juventa - 'Move Into Light feat. Erica Curran'. Keeping the ethereal vocals of the original and fusing them with textured bass, Juventa’s energetic dance number was transformed into an epic, hands in the air Dubstep track that only Koven could produce.

Koven were now ready to begin another exciting instalment with the arrival of Katie Boyle - one of dance music’s most talented, original vocalists. Featuring on labels such as Mainframe Recordings and Audioporn as well as teaming up with accomplished producers including techstep mammoths Fourward, High Maintenance and liquid heavyweights Hybrid Minds, Katie had rightly gained a reputation for both her extreme versatility and vocal ability.

The first official release from Koven’’s accomplished new line up, the epic 'Another Home' and haunting 'Petrichor' see soaring soundscapes, live instruments and deep bass complimented by Katie’s awe inspiring vocals. Featuring all the hallmarks of the unmistakable sound that has set Koven apart from the congested Dubstep arena, the 'Another Home' underlined Koven’s position as one of the most original, talented production teams in the scene.

After catching the attention of Jagermeister in the summer of 2013, ‘Another Home' has also been selected to be featured on Jagermiester’s new Walkabout Project, taking their ongoing sponsorship deal with the brand to another level. Across 27 venues, Jagermeister have distributed 1000 tokens for free downloads, further spreading the Koven name.

Summer of 2014 saw Koven have their biggest show to date, Mainstage at Exit Festival in front of 40,000 people alongside acts such as Rudimental and Skrillex. This coincided with a full diary of festival dates across the summer including Audioriver, Home Festival, Secret Garden Party, Campus Festival, Run To The Sun and many more.

That busy summer lead up to the release of their Debut EP 'Hereinafter'. This EP was split into two parts; Part One saw over 1 million hits on the premier uploads alone before the release of Part Two, 2 weeks later with the view count increasing by the tens of thousands daily. This release also saw a stream of ‘Live Sessions’ performed with a full band that further enhanced their performance capabilities.

Back on remix duties Koven have since completed a remix for Kokiri's 'Retrospect' which was released via Big Beat / Atlantic in the US and Minsitry Of Sound in the UK. This remix saw huge radio support including plays by the likes of Radio 1, 1xtra, Capital, XFM, KISS and more

The release 'Sometimes We Are' furthermore solidified the Koven sound with the act winning the 'Best EP Release' award at the 2015 Bass Music Awards.

The duo were then appointed to compose the music for a £2.7 million TV advertising campaign by Mast-Jaegermeister as part of its ‘Craft the Moment’ marketing initiative. The commercial premiered in the UK at the end of 2015, with high profile slots running for six weeks. The music was recorded with an eight piece orchestra and grand piano to capture the atmospheric and dynamic track, perfectly suiting Jägermeister’s Craft The Moment campaign ethos.

Koven are currently in the studio working on their next release and preparing for another busy year ahead.
