There have been a handful of interesting 360° videos in electronic music so far such as Sampha’s (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, Bjork’s Stonemilker and Run The Jewels’ Crown. Immersive and a whole new level in music video worlds and narratives, the 360° format has been developing rapidly over the last few years – in tandem with the rise of VR – but there’s yet to be one in drum & bass. Following SaSaSaS’s Internal Insomniacs video last month, MethLab’s Audeka have broken into 2018 with their largest release since 2016’s debut LP Lost Souls (one of our favourite albums of that year), their Engine Block EP is a four track excursion into dense dark musical matter as the US trio explore the trusty combustion engine and pay sonic homage. The set piece is Compression Ratio which places us deep within the machine itself in the first fully animated 360° video.
“The Engine Block EP is our sonic interpretation of the components and concepts associated with the internal combustion engine,” they explain. “The music video for Compression Ratio is the first dedicated 3D animated video for a drum and bass track. The details and immersive environment of the video add layers of depth to the listening experience. These layers work symbiotically with the component based imagery that we wanted to generate for this track.”
The video was created by longtime MethLab member Datacode. Get among the layers yourselves….
Another level up for the perennial innovators at MethLab. Compression Ratio is one of seven tracks on the full Engine Block EP. Out February 1, the remainder of the EP is equally impressive in its aesthetic and atmospheric approach. Spanning tempos and styles but all within Audeka’s signature outer-planetary style, you can stream some of it here…
